New Series: Learning Japanese through Shenmue

Last month our White Tiger patrons voted in our monthly poll to decide one of the post topics for this month, and the results are in!

The highest-voted topic was "Learning Japanese through Shenmue", which I plan to make the start of a new monthly series aimed at teaching basic conversational Japanese, with a Shenmue theme.

The level will be suitable for new learners, but with a few more advanced items thrown in here and there for people who may already know a little. Japanese voice-acted clips of various characters through-out Shenmue I & II will be used to illustrate words and phrases that are useful for everyday life in Japan (as well as one or two that may be of more interest to those intent on avenging their father's murder).

If you have any thoughts or suggestions regarding the lesson content, comments are welcome.

  1. Really nice idea. I'll be looking forward to seeing it. I like some of the old-fashioned terms in shenmue like ゴロツキ。

    1. Terms like that add an extra level of charm to the game, don't they. In a similar way, I hope that being able to understand some of the conversation in the Japanese-voiced version of the game will open up a new way for players to enjoy Shenmue, and provide motivation to study the language in earnest.

  2. I just wanted to comment and say I love how your site has grown so quickly and I definitely think there is an audience for people that love Shenmue and would want to get into Japanese this way. Can't wait to see it and will surely spread the word. :)

    1. That would be great, Bryan! And thanks for your positive comment about the blog. I've sensed a lot of people who have played Shenmue have felt an interest in learning about the language, so hopefully this series will help them take the first steps.

  4. I bought this watch for mother. When I received the watch, it was almost the same as the original. This is too unexpected. best watches
I shared this website with my friends. They are very happy, the price is cheap, and the quality of the watch is almost the same as the original.
