We’re very pleased to announce that the Suka Pass team has released version 2.0, a major new update for the fan-made mobile app inspired by the original Shenmue Passport.
SkillJim and I have had a lot of fun bringing this release together, and it has certainly kept us busy along the way. It is one of the most ambitious updates we have created for Suka Pass so far.
The main additions in version 2.0 include:
- Suka Pass Quiz, featuring a Daily Quiz, practice modes and Trainer Challenges
- Medals, quiz streaks and Winning Can rewards
- Shenmue Goodies, where character VMU animations can be unlocked and collected
- Everyone’s Space, featuring live Yokosuka weather and Shenmue community news
- A new My Collection page to view your items and medals
- Expanded statistics covering Quiz and Goodies in Data Review
- Topics page, bringing together links to Shenmue community websites
Below are a few details behind some of these features that Shenmue fans might find interesting.
Each day, the Daily Quiz gives everyone the same set of questions, making it possible for players to compare their results, scores and streaks with friends and other Shenmue fans.

One feature we are particularly pleased with is the live Yokosuka weather display in Everyone’s Space, which includes both the current conditions and the upcoming forecast.
SkillJim recorded all the audio snippets necessary to assemble weather announcements that closely reproduces the telephone forecast Ryo hears when calling the weather service in the original game. It is a small detail, but one that we hope brings a little more of Shenmue’s atmosphere into the app.

The Shenmue Goodies section contains a comprehensive collection of 341 character Goodies that can be unlocked by earning Winning Cans through the Quiz. Every character has a headshot to collect, while those whose original Goodie files have been recovered also include their VMU animation.

The characters are arranged into themed sets to complete, ranging from groups such as Dobuita Shopkeepers and Ryo’s Friends to some more unexpected collections, including the mysterious Nagai Industries.

This part of the app also has an important preservation aspect. Of the 341 Goodies included, 134 are currently marked as “Save Wanted,” meaning that we are still searching for copies of their original Goodie files and animations. For now, a still image taken from a Japanese guidebook has been inserted as a placeholder for each one, with all 134 painstakingly scanned by SkillJim.
The app clearly indicates which Goodies are still needed, and we would love to hear from anyone who may have one of these files saved on an old VMU from back in the Dreamcast era. We would be very happy to help identify and extract the file so that more of these original Shenmue Passport animations can be preserved for the future.
We would also like to give a special mention to Wandering Through Shenmue, whose support has become an important part of the project. As well as producing a weekly video series exploring Suka Pass, he spent time helping us test the app in the lead-up to release, provided valuable feedback, and contributed some of the text-based questions included in the new Quiz. His testing also helped us track down and stamp out a weird Nozomi animation glitch that only appeared on Google Pixel devices!
Our thanks also go to Shaun Hastings, who contributed a number of the character headshots used in the new VMU animation collection.
